Making digital resources

• Texts are more than simply sequences of glyphs

  • They have structure and context
  • They also have multiple readings

• Encoding or markup provides a means of making such readings explicit

  • only that which is explicit can be digitally processed

• Not all resources are textual – but they all require reading.
