Conclusions

• XML provides an excellent framework for

  • Objective recording of expert views about linguistic phenomena in a resource
  • Application-independent storage of intermediate results in NLP applications (pipe-lining)
  • Delivery of NLP system outputs directly to the end-user

• However....

  • There is a huge diversity of mutually incompatible and overlapping annotation schemes
  • Different applications may need different layers from different schemes
  • XML has some inherent limits
