The XML Recommendation (= standard) has features which can challenge software:

• Unicode (UTF-8 and UTF-16 encoding support)
• Entities: internal and (especially) external
• DTDs (optional)
• Parameter entities in DTDs

Which of these matters to you depends on the requirements of your application (e.g. PEs and TEI) and your data (e.g. Unicode and language support).
