CIMI struggled with a couple of problems, which remain as challenges for us today:

1. Inheritance: are contexts applied to elements automatically inherited by their subelements, and, if so, how is this inheritance to be expressed in queries?
2. ‘Discontinuity of discourse’: in practice the topics addressed within prose do not fit neatly into boxes. Subjects change mid-paragraph; parenthetical observations (with their own, different ‘context’) appear in the middle of an otherwise coherent passage, etc. To deal with this we need a very flexible markup scheme, and very assiduous markup!
